What do muscle aches feel like with Malaria?

Malaria-related aching can feel like soreness throughout the body rather than pain in one small muscle. It may come with chills, sweating, headache, unusual tiredness, nausea, or a feeling of being unwell. Symptoms can develop after travel or residence in an area where malaria is present, and the illness can worsen quickly.

Aches alone cannot identify Malaria. Similar discomfort occurs with viral infections and other conditions. Tell a clinician about recent travel, mosquito exposure, fever episodes, and any medicines taken. Testing is needed when Malaria is possible, because treatment depends on the specific infection.

If you have muscle aches with fever or chills after travel to a malaria area, seek same-day medical assessment and mention the travel dates and places. Do not wait for the symptoms to settle or rely on leftover medicines. Rest, sip fluids if you can, and follow the clinician's advice while awaiting assessment.

Use only fever or pain medicine that is suitable for you, especially if you have liver, kidney, stomach, or bleeding problems. Keep a record of temperature readings and any change in alertness or breathing.

Go to an emergency service for confusion, unusual drowsiness, seizures, fainting, difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or rapidly worsening weakness. Fever after travel in a malaria area warrants urgent assessment even if the aches seem mild.
