What does lower back pain feel like with vertebral compression fracture?

The pain is often localised to one area of the back and may feel sharp with movement, then aching at rest. Rolling, rising from a chair, or taking a deep breath can hurt because these actions move the spine and surrounding muscles. Pain may wrap around the side of the trunk, although this is not present for everyone. A fracture can follow a fall or forceful event, but weakened bone may fracture during an ordinary movement. Only an examination and appropriate imaging can clarify the cause.

Seek medical advice promptly for new severe focal back pain, especially after a fall or if bone strength is reduced. Avoid heavy lifting, forceful twisting, and high-impact activity until advised. Change position carefully, use support when standing, and take medicines only as directed for you. Do not begin vigorous spinal exercises before a clinician has considered a fracture.

Urgent assessment is needed after significant injury, sudden severe pain, or pain that prevents normal movement. Go to emergency care for new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, or breathing difficulty with severe chest or back pain. These symptoms can signal nerve involvement or another urgent problem.
