How it may appear

Sepsis is a dangerous response to infection. Appetite may fall abruptly, with nausea or vomiting, exhaustion, confusion, breathlessness, clammy skin, or feeling unusually hot or cold. Loss of appetite alone does not diagnose sepsis; rapid change and the combination with other signs matter.

It can worsen quickly. A person who is unusually drowsy, confused, or unable to drink may not be able to judge symptoms safely.

What to do

If appetite loss begins during suspected infection, assess the whole person. Seek urgent assessment for rapid worsening, unusual sleepiness, confusion, harder breathing, or much less urine. Keep the person supervised and take a medicine list. Do not delay care while trying home remedies.

When to seek emergency help

Call emergency services for confusion, difficulty breathing, blue or mottled skin, fainting, seizure, inability to wake someone, or rapid deterioration. Urgent help is also needed when suspected infection prevents drinking.
