What does loss of appetite feel like with influenza?

Short answer
Loss of Appetite is a common presentation of Influenza and may feel like little interest in food during fever, fatigue, nausea, or a sore throat.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Why eating feels hard
- Fever, fatigue, sore throat, nausea, or congestion can reduce interest in food.
- Priority
- Rest and keep taking frequent sips of fluid.
The appetite change
Influenza can leave you too tired to prepare or eat a meal. Fever, body aches, headache, cough, a blocked nose, or a sore throat may make eating uncomfortable. Nausea can also reduce interest in food, and congestion may dull taste and smell. You may prefer small amounts of soft food or fluids rather than a full meal. Appetite loss can occur with many infections and does not identify influenza by itself; the wider pattern and clinical assessment matter.
Caring for yourself
Rest and take frequent sips of fluid. If eating is difficult, choose small portions of soup, yoghurt, fruit, or another food you tolerate, and return to normal meals gradually. Follow medicine instructions and ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable symptom relief, particularly if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, or take regular medicines. Stay home while unwell and improve ventilation and hand hygiene around others.
When to seek help
Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, confusion, fainting, or unusual difficulty waking. Contact a clinician promptly if you cannot drink, symptoms are worsening, fever returns after improvement, or appetite remains very poor. People at higher risk of complications should seek advice early after influenza symptoms begin.
What to ask
Ask whether your symptoms fit influenza or another infection, how to manage fever and throat pain, and whether antiviral treatment or testing is appropriate. Tell the clinician when symptoms started, whether you can drink and urinate normally, and which medical conditions or medicines may affect your care.
