Short answer

Loss of Appetite is a very common presentation of Gastroenteritis, often occurring with nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, or fever.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Often felt with
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, or fever.
First priority
Take frequent small sips to help maintain hydration.

What the feeling can be like

During gastroenteritis, food may seem unappealing rather than simply less tasty. You might feel queasy when you smell food, become full quickly, or prefer to avoid eating because of stomach cramps or loose stools. Appetite can fall while the body is responding to an infection or irritation of the stomach and bowel. Vomiting and diarrhoea can also make drinking and eating feel difficult. A reduced appetite by itself does not establish gastroenteritis, because many conditions can affect appetite.

Looking after yourself

Prioritise fluids by taking frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. When nausea eases, try small portions of plain or familiar foods and increase them gradually as tolerated. Rest and wash your hands carefully to reduce spread if an infection is possible. Avoid preparing food for other people while you have vomiting or diarrhoea. A clinician can advise about medicines, particularly for children, older adults, pregnancy, or long-term health conditions.

Warning signs

Get urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, feel faint or confused, have blood in vomit or stool, or develop severe abdominal pain. Medical advice is also needed for a high fever, worsening symptoms, or appetite that does not begin to return after the stomach symptoms improve. Children and frail adults can become dehydrated quickly.

What to discuss

Ask how to replace fluids, which foods are suitable as you recover, and whether your symptoms need testing. Share the timing of vomiting or diarrhoea, your ability to urinate and drink, any recent travel or sick contacts, and medicines you take.

Questions people ask

Is it normal to have little interest in food with gastroenteritis?

Yes. Appetite commonly falls while nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or cramps are active.

What if drinking also feels difficult?

Use very small, frequent sips and seek medical help if fluids will not stay down or dehydration signs appear.
