What does long COVID mean?

Short answer
Long COVID means symptoms continue, return, or appear after COVID-19 and last beyond the initial illness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How long COVID can feel
People can have one symptom or several, with good and difficult days. Ongoing fatigue may make ordinary tasks harder, while difficulty concentrating can feel like slowed thinking or trouble finding words. Joint pain, low mood, loss of smell, and loss of taste may also occur. Symptoms can change over time and may be affected by activity, sleep, or another illness.
Long COVID is assessed from the story of your illness, current symptoms, and examination. There is no single symptom that confirms it, and other conditions can cause similar problems. A clinician may check for treatable contributors and help you record how symptoms affect work, exercise, sleep, and daily activities.
Managing symptoms
Keep a simple record of symptoms, activity, sleep, and recovery time. Pace tasks by breaking them into smaller parts and allow rest before you become exhausted. Eat and drink regularly if you can, keep a steady sleep routine, and increase activity gradually rather than pushing through a flare. Arrange a medical review if symptoms interfere with daily life or are not improving.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, new chest pressure, fainting, sudden confusion, blue or grey lips, or sudden weakness on one side. Contact a clinician soon for worsening breathlessness, persistent palpitations, dehydration, or a marked change in mood. Long COVID should not be assumed when a new or serious symptom needs another explanation.
Questions for your doctor
Could another condition explain these symptoms? Which checks are appropriate for my breathing, heart rate, sleep, mood, or concentration? How should I pace activity? What warning signs should make me seek urgent help, and when should we review my progress?

Questions people ask
Does long COVID affect everyone in the same way?
No. Symptoms and their impact vary, and they can change from day to day.
Can long COVID be diagnosed from fatigue alone?
No. Fatigue has many possible causes, so a clinician considers the full history and checks for other explanations.
