The operation can contour areas such as the abdomen, flanks, hips, thighs, arms, back, chest or under the chin when there is enough skin elasticity and a suitable fat pocket. It is used for shape refinement, including stubborn fat pockets and submental fullness. The surgeon moves a thin cannula through the treatment area to loosen and remove targeted fat.

Liposuction does not treat obesity, cellulite, loose skin, muscle weakness or the medical causes of weight change. It also does not replace nutrition, movement or treatment for a condition affecting body weight. The visible contour depends on the amount and location of fat, skin recoil, healing and whether weight remains stable afterward.

A surgical consultation should cover your goals, health history, medicines, smoking or nicotine use, previous operations, skin quality and the exact areas to be shaped. The surgeon may mark the body while standing and discuss whether one area or several areas can be treated safely. Follow instructions about medicines, fasting, bathing, compression garments and arranging transport and help during early recovery.

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, temporary numbness and fluid drainage can occur while the tissues heal. Walking when advised can support recovery, while strenuous activity should wait until the surgical team clears it. If loose skin is the main concern, skin-tightening surgery or an energy-based option may be discussed instead; non-surgical alternatives include cryolipolysis for selected fat pockets.

Contact your surgical team promptly for worsening rather than settling pain, increasing one-sided swelling, spreading redness, fever, pus, wound separation or shortness of breath. Sudden chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness or coughing blood requires emergency care. A new painful swelling or skin colour change also deserves prompt review instead of being managed at home.

Ask which fat pocket is suitable for removal, whether your skin is likely to recoil, what anaesthesia and aftercare are planned, how activity will be limited, and what changes are realistic. Ask how the plan compares with cryolipolysis or radiofrequency skin tightening when the main concern is a small pocket or lax skin.
