What Does Swollen Lips Feel Like With Angioedema?

Most people with Angioedema notice swollen lips as sudden tight, firm, tingling, or warm tissue that may feel uncomfortable. The swelling can affect one or both lips and may make speaking, eating, or closing the mouth feel different. It may occur with swelling elsewhere or with itchy hives, although hives are not required.

Swollen Lips is a very common presentation of Angioedema. Lip tissue may feel stretched, heavy, numb, burning, or tender rather than itchy. The change can develop over a short time and may involve the tongue, eyelids, face, hands, or feet. Triggers can include foods, medicines, insect stings, contact exposures, or other causes, and sometimes no clear trigger is found.

The feeling alone cannot show what caused the swelling. Note when it began, what you ate or took beforehand, and whether it has happened before. Do not assume that a mild sensation will remain mild, because swelling near the mouth can progress to the tongue or throat.

Stop and record any suspected new exposure if it is safe to do so, and follow an existing allergy action plan. Avoid taking an unfamiliar medicine to treat the episode without professional guidance. Arrange medical review after a new or unexplained episode so triggers, medicines, and recurrence can be assessed.

Call emergency services immediately for tongue or throat swelling, a tight throat, hoarse voice, trouble swallowing, wheezing, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening swelling. Do not drive yourself if breathing or circulation symptoms are present. Even without breathing symptoms, prompt assessment is sensible when swelling is new, extensive, or progressing.
