Short answer

Leaking Urine is a common presentation of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and may occur with movement, urgency, or poor bladder emptying.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible trigger
Coughing, lifting, running or changing position
Assessment focus
Strength, relaxation and coordination of pelvic muscles

How pelvic muscles affect urination

The pelvic floor helps support the bladder and close the urethra. If the muscles are weak, urine may escape during coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, running or changing position. If they are too tense or poorly coordinated, you may feel urgency, hesitancy, spraying, straining or that the bladder has not emptied fully.

Some people notice pelvic pressure, discomfort during sex, constipation or difficulty relaxing the muscles. Symptoms can begin after pregnancy, birth, surgery, injury or repeated straining, but an assessment is needed to understand the pattern.

Most people with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction notice leaking urine, yet leakage can also come from bladder irritation, infection or other causes. The symptom does not diagnose the condition by itself.

Steps that may help

Track when leakage happens and whether the bladder was full, urgency was present, or physical pressure triggered it. A pelvic health physiotherapist can check whether you need strengthening, relaxation, breathing coordination or a combination.

Do not repeatedly clench the pelvic floor all day, especially if you have pain or difficulty emptying. Avoid straining with bowel movements, and ask a clinician how to exercise safely while symptoms are being assessed.

When to seek care

Book an assessment for ongoing leakage, pelvic pressure, difficulty emptying, or pain with urination or sex. Seek prompt care for fever, blood in the urine, severe pelvic pain or inability to pass urine.

Sudden leakage with new leg weakness, numbness around the genitals, loss of bowel control or severe back pain needs urgent assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Are my muscles weak, overactive or poorly coordinated? Should I see a pelvic health physiotherapist? Could constipation, infection or a medicine be contributing? Which exercises should I avoid until I am assessed?

Questions people ask

Should everyone with leakage do more pelvic floor squeezing?

Not necessarily. Tight or poorly relaxing muscles may need coordination and relaxation work rather than repeated strengthening.

Can pelvic floor dysfunction affect bladder emptying?

Yes. Poor coordination or excessive muscle tension can make starting or completing urination difficult.
