Short answer

Knee Swelling is a common presentation of Knee Bursitis and may feel soft, puffy, tender, or tight around the irritated bursa.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical area
Over or beside the kneecap, depending on the irritated bursa
Common trigger
Repeated kneeling or pressure

What the sensation can mean

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion near a joint. When one becomes irritated, swelling can sit over the kneecap or on the inner side of the knee, depending on the bursa involved. The area may feel warm and sore when you kneel, bend the knee, or press on it. Bursitis swelling is often more localised than swelling filling the whole joint, although the surrounding tissues can also feel stiff.

The skin may look full or slightly raised, and movement can feel restricted because the swollen cushion is being compressed. Knee swelling has several possible causes, so sensation alone cannot identify its source. Read more about [Knee Bursitis](/conditions/knee-bursitis/) and [Knee Swelling](/symptoms/knee-swelling/).

What you can do

Reduce activities that repeatedly press on the knee, especially kneeling, and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Rest the joint between activities, keep gentle movement within comfort, and avoid leaning your body weight onto the tender area. A clinician or physiotherapist can check movement and suggest exercises once the irritation settles.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment if swelling persists, returns often, or makes walking or bending difficult. Seek urgent care if the knee becomes rapidly more swollen, very hot or red, severely painful, or you feel feverish or unwell, because infection needs prompt treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which bursa appears affected, whether infection needs to be excluded, which movements to pause, and when strengthening or physiotherapy is appropriate. Mention any skin wound, injection, recent procedure, or fever.

Questions people ask

Can knee bursitis cause warmth?

Yes. An irritated bursa can make the nearby skin feel warm and tender; marked heat with redness or fever needs prompt assessment.

Should I keep moving?

Gentle movement within comfort can help prevent stiffness, while kneeling and painful repeated bending should be reduced.
