What Does Knee Pain Feel Like With Knee Bursitis?

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion near a joint. When one around the knee becomes irritated, pain is often close to the kneecap or at another specific pressure point, depending on the bursa involved. You may notice a soft or puffy swelling, soreness when kneeling, and pain when bending the knee. The area can feel warm. Because tendon, skin, joint, and bone problems can cause similar findings, an examination is useful when symptoms are persistent or unclear.

Avoid kneeling, direct pressure, and the activity that repeatedly aggravates the knee. Use a cushion or knee protection when kneeling becomes necessary. A wrapped cold pack can be used briefly for comfort, and gentle movement can help prevent stiffness if it does not increase pain. A clinician may recommend exercises, medicine, or drainage depending on the cause; do not attempt to drain the swelling yourself.

Seek urgent assessment if swelling is rapidly increasing or the knee is hot and red with fever, chills, or feeling unwell. Get prompt advice if you cannot bend or bear weight, the skin is broken, or symptoms followed a significant injury. Arrange a routine review if the swelling does not settle, returns repeatedly, or interferes with work, sleep, or ordinary walking.
