What does joint pain feel like with reactive arthritis?

Reactive arthritis often affects joints in the legs, such as the knees, ankles, or feet, but other joints can hurt. The affected area may become visibly swollen and tender, and walking can be difficult. Symptoms may begin after an infection affecting the gut or urinary and genital tract. Some people also notice eye irritation, painful urination, skin changes, or pain where a tendon joins bone. These features need medical assessment because several conditions can produce a similar picture.

Record when the joint pain began and mention any recent diarrhoea, urinary symptoms, genital symptoms, eye irritation, or skin changes. Rest the painful joint from strenuous loading while maintaining gentle movement within comfort. Arrange prompt medical review; treatment may address inflammation and any underlying infection when appropriate. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s medicine.

A sudden hot, swollen, very painful joint needs urgent assessment, especially with fever or feeling unwell, because joint infection must be considered. Seek urgent help for a painful red eye, light sensitivity, vision change, inability to bear weight, or rapidly worsening swelling.
