What does joint pain feel like with chikungunya?

The pain often affects hands, wrists, ankles, feet, knees, or other small and large joints. Joints may feel swollen, tender, or difficult to move, with stiffness that makes walking or gripping harder. A sudden fever, headache, muscle aches, rash, or tiredness may occur around the same time. Joint discomfort can improve gradually but may continue or return after the fever has settled. Similar symptoms have other causes, so the pattern alone cannot confirm chikungunya.

Rest during the feverish phase, keep drinking fluids, and move affected joints gently within a comfortable range to reduce stiffness. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which pain medicine is suitable, particularly if dengue fever is possible or you have liver, kidney, stomach, or bleeding problems. Note your fever, rash, travel or mosquito exposure, swollen joints, and medicines taken. Arrange an assessment if pain is severe, limits walking, or does not start settling.

Get urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, inability to drink, or unusual sleepiness. Seek prompt care for a single hot and very swollen joint, new weakness, or rapidly worsening illness, because another condition may need immediate treatment.
