What Does Joint Aspiration Treat?

A clinician uses a sterile needle to withdraw fluid from a swollen joint, bursa, or cyst. Removing the fluid may ease tightness and improve movement. A sample can be checked for crystals, blood, or signs of infection, so aspiration may be both a treatment and a diagnostic step.

It may be used when fluid collects with gout, pseudogout, bursitis, or a Baker's cyst. A ganglion cyst can also be drained in selected situations. Septic arthritis needs urgent medical assessment because infection inside a joint requires prompt treatment; aspiration helps identify it and guide care.

Arrange an assessment if swelling is new, keeps returning, or limits walking or hand use. Tell the clinician about fever, skin breaks, blood-thinning medicine, allergies, and previous joint problems. Do not try to drain a joint or cyst yourself. After aspiration, follow the dressing and activity advice, keep the area clean, and report worsening symptoms.

Seek urgent care for a hot, very painful swollen joint with fever or chills, rapidly spreading redness, or feeling faint. These features can occur with a serious infection. Contact the treating clinic promptly if the puncture site develops increasing pain, drainage, redness, or swelling after the procedure.

Ask which space will be aspirated, whether the fluid will be tested for crystals or infection, what improvement to expect, and which activities or medicines need adjustment afterward.
