What does jaundice feel like with hepatitis B?

Jaundice can be visible in the whites of the eyes and later on the skin. Urine may become dark and stools may look pale because bile is not being processed normally. Hepatitis B can also cause profound tiredness, reduced appetite, nausea, muscle or joint aches, a mild fever, or discomfort under the right ribs. Itching may occur, although some people notice little physical sensation from the colour change itself.

Hepatitis B can be short-lived or persist, and some people have few symptoms. Yellowing therefore needs proper testing rather than a conclusion based on appearance alone.

Arrange prompt medical care for new jaundice or dark urine. A clinician may request blood tests that assess liver irritation and hepatitis B markers, then explain whether further monitoring or treatment is needed. Avoid alcohol and do not start supplements or extra pain medicines without advice. Until you know more, avoid sharing razors or toothbrushes and cover cuts; ask a clinician about testing and vaccination for household or sexual contacts.

Seek urgent care if jaundice occurs with confusion, severe sleepiness, fainting, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, unusual bleeding, or rapidly increasing swelling. These changes can reflect serious liver dysfunction. Contact a clinician quickly after a possible exposure, especially if you are pregnant or already have liver disease.
