What does jaundice feel like with gallstones?

Jaundice is often easiest to notice in the whites of the eyes, then on the skin. The colour may be more visible in natural light and can be harder to judge on darker skin tones. Gallstones can obstruct the ducts that carry bile away from the liver. Bile backing up can make urine tea-coloured and stools unusually light. Some people develop widespread itching, nausea, or a dull ache under the right ribs; pain may become intense and come in waves after eating.

These changes describe a possible pattern, not a diagnosis. Other liver, blood, or bile-duct problems can also cause jaundice, and some people with gallstones have no symptoms at all.

Arrange a prompt medical assessment if your eyes or skin look yellow, especially alongside abdominal pain, dark urine, or pale stools. A clinician may examine your abdomen and order blood tests or imaging to check the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts. Until you are assessed, note when the colour change began, whether pain follows meals, and any fever, vomiting, or new medicines. Avoid alcohol and do not take extra over-the-counter medicines without checking that they are suitable for you.

Seek urgent care for yellowing with severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, fever or chills, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, fainting, or bleeding. These symptoms can signal a blocked or infected bile duct or another problem needing rapid treatment. Do not wait for the colour to deepen before getting help.
