What does IVF treat?

Short answer
IVF treats selected fertility problems by fertilising an egg outside the body and transferring an embryo into the uterus.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Core laboratory step
- Fertilisation is attempted outside the body before embryo transfer.
- Reasons considered
- Blocked tubes, diminished ovarian reserve, sperm-related factors, and unexplained infertility may be discussed.
Fertility problems IVF may address
IVF may help when fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged, when ovarian reserve is diminished, or when sperm and egg are not meeting through other routes. It may be considered for female infertility, hydrosalpinx, some fertility effects associated with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or infertility without a clear explanation. Fertility history, age, ovarian response, sperm findings, and previous treatment shape the plan.
The laboratory step allows fertilisation to be attempted outside the body. ICSI may be considered when sperm movement or fertilisation is a concern. IVF does not remove every cause of infertility, and the team should explain which barrier it is intended to address.
What assessment involves
Before treatment, the clinic may review ovarian reserve, ovulation, the uterus, tubes, semen findings, medicines, and general health. Ask how eggs will be stimulated and monitored, how embryos are selected for transfer, and what happens if the response is lower or higher than expected. Discuss emotional support and your preferences before starting.
When to contact the clinic
After medicines or procedures, contact the fertility team for severe abdominal pain, marked swelling, vomiting, faintness, breathing difficulty, fever, or heavy bleeding. A positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding also needs prompt medical advice.
Questions to ask
Ask: Which fertility factor is IVF addressing for me? Would ICSI, IUI, or another approach be reasonable? What tests are still needed? How are medicines monitored? What symptoms after treatment should prompt urgent contact?

Questions people ask
Can IVF help with blocked fallopian tubes?
It can bypass the tubes because fertilisation takes place outside the body, but suitability depends on the full clinical picture.
Is IVF the same as IUI?
No. IUI places prepared sperm in the uterus, while IVF involves fertilisation outside the body and embryo transfer.
