What does IV fluid therapy treat?

A clinician may use IV fluids after fluid loss from vomiting, diarrhoea, heat exhaustion, or another acute illness. They can restore circulating fluid and help correct disturbances in salts when assessment shows that this is needed. IV fluids support the body while the underlying problem is managed; they do not remove the infection or toxin causing illness. In some cases, oral rehydration therapy is more suitable because it replaces fluid and salts by mouth and can continue outside a clinical setting.

A healthcare professional checks your symptoms, pulse, blood pressure, hydration, and relevant medical history before choosing the fluid and rate. A small tube is placed into a vein, and the bag is monitored while it runs. Tell the team if the site becomes painful, swollen, or wet, or if you feel short of breath. Once you can drink safely and the cause is controlled, the clinician may stop the infusion and give home-care instructions.

Get urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, or breathing difficulty. After an infusion, report new swelling, chest discomfort, or worsening breathlessness promptly. People with heart, kidney, or liver problems may need especially careful fluid assessment because extra fluid can be harmful.
