What does itchy throat feel like with common cold?

A cold can inflame the lining of the throat and upper airways. Early on, the feeling may be more tickly than painful. It can later become rough or sore, particularly when you swallow or speak. Most people with Common Cold also notice some combination of a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, cough, tiredness, or a hoarse voice. Mucus dripping from the nose may keep irritating the back of the throat. Symptoms can change over several days rather than staying identical throughout the illness.

Sip warm or cool fluids according to what feels soothing, and rest your voice if talking increases the irritation. Keeping the air comfortably humid and avoiding cigarette smoke can reduce dryness. Saline nasal spray may ease congestion and post-nasal drip. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief if the throat becomes sore, taking account of your age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Antibiotics do not treat the viruses that cause ordinary colds.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are severe, keep worsening, or do not begin to settle. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, confusion, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and dizziness. A high or persistent fever also deserves assessment, especially in a young child, older adult, or person with a long-term condition.
