Short answer

A wrist sprain can cause pain, swelling, tenderness, and difficulty using the hand after a ligament is overstretched or torn.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common triggers
A fall, twist, or sudden force through the hand.
Useful protection
Rest painful use and support the wrist without restricting circulation.

How a sprained wrist may feel

Pain may start immediately after a fall onto the hand, a twist, or a sudden force. It can feel sore at rest and sharper when you grip, turn a key, push up from a chair, or move the wrist toward the injury. Swelling and bruising may develop, and the wrist can feel weak or less secure. Tenderness over a particular spot is useful information for an examination.

A sprain affects wrist ligaments, but a fracture or tendon injury can feel similar. Persistent pain, marked tenderness, or poor hand function should be assessed rather than assumed to be a simple sprain.

Early self-care

Rest from painful gripping and protect the wrist with a comfortable support. Use a wrapped cold pack for short periods and keep the hand elevated when swelling is prominent. Remove rings if swelling is developing. A clinician or physiotherapist can advise whether splinting, taping, or guided physiotherapy is appropriate; support should not cause numbness, colour change, or increasing pain.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt assessment for severe pain, visible deformity, inability to move the wrist or fingers, worsening swelling, or pain directly over a wrist bone after an injury. Seek emergency help for a cold or blue hand, new numbness, or an open wound.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether an X-ray or other assessment is needed, how long to use support, and which movements are safe. Ask when to begin gentle motion and whether taping or physiotherapy could help restore grip and wrist function.

Questions people ask

How can I tell a sprain from a fracture?

You usually cannot tell reliably from symptoms alone. Bone tenderness, deformity, or ongoing difficulty using the hand warrants clinical assessment and possible imaging.

Should I keep my wrist completely still?

Protect it from painful loading, but follow clinical advice about gentle movement so stiffness does not build unnecessarily.
