What does induction of labour treat?

A maternity team may recommend induction for fetal growth restriction, obstetric cholestasis, low amniotic fluid or a post-term pregnancy. The decision weighs gestational age, test results, the condition of the cervix, the baby's wellbeing and your health.

Methods can include a membrane sweep, medicines that soften the cervix, a balloon catheter, breaking the waters or an oxytocin infusion. Labour is monitored because contractions and the baby's heart rate may change. If induction is unsuitable or does not lead to birth, a caesarean section may be discussed.

Ask why induction is recommended, when it should happen and which method is likely to be used first. Pack for a possible hospital stay, follow instructions about medicines and eating, and tell the team about reduced movements, bleeding, leaking fluid, pain or previous birth complications.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, suspected waters breaking, regular painful contractions, severe itching with pregnancy or severe abdominal pain. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, collapse, severe breathlessness or a seizure.

Ask what risk the induction is addressing, how the baby's wellbeing will be monitored, how long each stage may take, what pain relief is available, and when another birth method would be considered.
