What does hysteroscopic polypectomy treat?

A polyp is a growth arising from the lining of the womb or the cervix. Some cause no symptoms, while others contribute to bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, heavier periods or fertility difficulties. Removal allows the tissue to be sent for laboratory assessment and may address symptoms caused by the polyp.

The surgeon guides a hysteroscope through the vagina and cervix to see the area directly, then removes the growth with fine instruments. The procedure does not treat every cause of abnormal bleeding or infertility, and polyps can sometimes return.

Tell the team about medicines, allergies, possible pregnancy and any infection symptoms. Ask whether the procedure uses local or general anaesthesia, how to prepare, and when to expect the tissue result. Plan transport and follow the clinic's advice about activity afterward.

Seek advice for increasing pain, fever, heavy bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, dizziness or difficulty passing urine after removal. Sudden severe pain or collapse needs urgent medical help.

Ask where the polyp is located, what symptoms it may explain, whether tissue will be examined, and what follow-up is needed if bleeding continues.
