Low thyroid hormone can be associated with tissue changes and dryness that alter how the vocal folds vibrate. Some people describe a thick or swollen feeling in the throat, vocal fatigue, reduced pitch, or speech that sounds heavy. Other possible features of hypothyroidism include tiredness, feeling unusually cold, dry skin, constipation, and changes in concentration. These symptoms overlap with many conditions, and hoarseness by itself does not establish a thyroid diagnosis.

Arrange a clinical review if the voice change continues or appears with other symptoms of low thyroid function. A clinician may examine your neck and throat and request blood tests that assess thyroid function. Take prescribed thyroid medicine exactly as directed and do not change the dose based on voice symptoms alone.
