What does heavy bleeding after birth feel like with postpartum haemorrhage?

Most people with Postpartum Haemorrhage notice heavy bleeding after birth. The flow may seem sudden, soak through maternity pads quickly, or include large clots. Some people feel a gush when standing or changing position. The sensation itself can vary: bleeding may occur with cramping, a tender lower abdomen, or no pain at all. Blood loss can also make you feel weak, light-headed, unusually tired, short of breath, clammy, or aware of a fast heartbeat. These body sensations matter even if the bleeding does not look dramatic.

Tell the midwife, obstetrician, or maternity unit immediately if bleeding becomes heavy or increases after birth. Sit or lie down while help is coming, and do not drive yourself if you feel faint. Keep track of when the bleeding changed, how quickly pads are becoming wet, whether clots are present, and any medicines you have taken. Do not put anything into the vagina or try to remove tissue yourself. A clinician may check your pulse, blood pressure, abdomen, uterus, and the amount of blood loss, then arrange treatment based on what they find.

Seek emergency help now for bleeding that rapidly soaks pads, repeated large clots, faintness, confusion, severe weakness, breathlessness, chest discomfort, a racing heartbeat, or pale, cold, sweaty skin. Urgent assessment is also needed if bleeding is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, fever, or feeling suddenly unwell. Postpartum haemorrhage can develop soon after delivery or later in the postpartum period, so worsening bleeding should not be watched at home.
