What does heartburn feel like with peptic ulcer?

A peptic ulcer can cause a gnawing, burning, or aching feeling in the upper abdomen. When reflux occurs at the same time, you may also notice chest burning, a sour taste, belching, or fluid rising into the throat. Some people feel symptoms around meals, while others notice discomfort later or during the night. Nausea or early fullness can accompany the pain.

These symptoms overlap with reflux, gastritis, and other digestive problems. The sensation alone cannot confirm an ulcer. A clinician may ask about painkillers, previous stomach problems, vomiting, black stools, and whether food changes the discomfort.

Arrange a medical review if ulcer symptoms are possible, especially when burning keeps returning or needs repeated self-treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice, but ask a clinician or pharmacist about anti-inflammatory painkillers and other medicines that may irritate the stomach. Eat in a way that feels comfortable and avoid personal triggers such as alcohol if they worsen symptoms.

Treatment depends on the cause and may involve medicine to reduce acid or address an underlying infection. Avoid relying on antacids alone when pain is persistent, because relief does not explain why the symptom is present.

Seek emergency help for vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, sudden severe abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, or a rigid abdomen.
