What does heartburn feel like with acid reflux?

The sensation may be hot, tight, or irritating in the centre of the chest. A sour or bitter taste, burping, throat irritation, hoarseness, or a feeling of fluid coming upward can accompany it. Symptoms may be more noticeable after a large meal, when bending over, or when lying down. Some people experience discomfort in the upper abdomen rather than the chest. These features can fit Acid Reflux, but chest symptoms also have other causes and should not be self-diagnosed.

Notice which foods, drinks, meal sizes, or positions bring symptoms on. Eat more slowly, avoid lying down soon after eating, and raise the upper body during sleep if night symptoms occur. Avoid clothing that compresses the abdomen. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antacid or acid-reducing medicine is suitable, particularly if symptoms recur or you take other medicines.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Seek prompt medical advice for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or symptoms that are frequent or worsening.
