What does headache feel like with hypertension?

Many people with high blood pressure have no noticeable symptoms. When a headache occurs, it may feel pressure-like, throbbing, or diffuse, but there is no single headache pattern that proves blood pressure is elevated. A reading is needed to assess blood pressure. Severe elevation may occur alongside vision changes, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, confusion, weakness, or difficulty speaking.

Sit quietly for a few minutes before taking a blood-pressure reading with a correctly fitting cuff, if one is available. Record the result, time, symptoms, and any medicines taken. Continue prescribed treatment exactly as directed and do not take extra doses to chase a reading unless a clinician has told you to do so. Arrange medical advice if readings remain high or headaches recur.

Seek emergency help for a severe or rapidly worsening headache with chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, or a sudden change in vision. A sudden explosive headache also needs emergency assessment. Do not drive yourself if you feel confused, weak, faint, or unsafe.

Ask how often to check your blood pressure, which readings require action, whether your medicines could contribute to headaches, and how to manage missed doses. Share your headache timing, severity, associated symptoms, home readings, and any recent changes in medication, caffeine, sleep, or stress.
