What Does Headache Feel Like With Allergic Rhinitis?

Headache is a common presentation of Allergic Rhinitis and may feel like pressure or a dull ache around the forehead, cheeks, nose, or eyes. It can occur with sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, watery eyes, and throat irritation. The discomfort may become more noticeable when nasal congestion makes it harder to breathe through the nose.

Allergic rhinitis inflames the lining of the nose after exposure to a trigger such as pollen, dust mites, mould, or animal dander. Swelling and mucus can obstruct the nasal passages and create a feeling of fullness across the face. Some people describe the headache as pressure behind the eyes or across the brow; others notice a heavy, congested feeling rather than sharp pain. Headache alone does not identify the cause, because dehydration, poor sleep, viral illness, migraine, and other problems can produce similar symptoms.

Try to reduce contact with the trigger you suspect, keep windows closed during high-pollen periods, and rinse your face or shower after being outdoors. Drink fluids and rest in a quiet environment. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear mucus when performed with sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or a nasal corticosteroid is suitable for you, especially if you have other medical conditions, take regular medicines, or are pregnant.

Seek urgent medical help for a sudden, extremely severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, a seizure, trouble speaking, or new vision loss. Prompt assessment is also needed for headache with a stiff neck and fever, repeated vomiting, or swelling around an eye. Arrange a medical review if headaches keep returning, disrupt sleep or daily activities, follow a head injury, or do not improve as the nasal symptoms settle.
