What does hand numbness feel like with cervical radiculopathy?

Cervical radiculopathy involves irritation or pressure around a nerve leaving the neck. The altered sensation can travel from the neck or shoulder through the arm and into particular fingers, rather than affecting the whole hand evenly. Turning the neck, looking up, coughing, or holding one position may make it more noticeable. You may also have neck pain, arm pain, weakness, or a less secure grip. The exact fingers involved depend on which nerve is affected, so the sensation pattern helps a clinician assess the neck, shoulder, arm, and hand together.

Notice when the numbness starts, which fingers are affected, whether it changes with neck movement, and whether you are dropping objects. Keep the neck and arm gently moving within comfort, avoid prolonged positions that clearly worsen the sensation, and arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with sleep or daily tasks. Do not force stretches or exercises that increase arm pain, tingling, or weakness.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly worsening weakness, loss of hand function, severe unrelenting pain, new trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness affecting a large area suddenly. After an injury, urgent assessment is also appropriate when the hand becomes cold, pale, or blue, or when swelling and pain are severe.
