What does a growth scan treat?
Short answer
A growth scan does not treat disease; it checks fetal growth and pregnancy features that guide care.

What the scan assesses
A sonographer measures parts of the baby to estimate growth and checks movement, fluid around the baby, placental position and blood flow when needed. The results can help clinicians monitor suspected fetal growth restriction, pregnancies affected by gestational diabetes, and twin or multiple pregnancy.
Fluid levels may be assessed when oligohydramnios or polyhydramnios is a concern. Placental position can also be reviewed, including when placenta praevia is being monitored. A result outside the expected range does not by itself explain the cause; your maternity team interprets it alongside your dates, symptoms and previous scans.
How to prepare and follow up
Follow the appointment instructions and bring your pregnancy notes if requested. Ask which measurements will be taken and when you will receive the report. Depending on the findings, your team may arrange another scan, blood-flow assessment, monitoring of the baby’s heart rate, or a discussion about timing and place of birth.
The scan is not a treatment and cannot correct growth or fluid problems. Its value is identifying changes early enough for the maternity team to adjust surveillance or care. When to seek care
Contact your maternity unit urgently if you notice reduced or changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache or vision changes. Do not wait for a scheduled scan when a new pregnancy warning sign appears.
