What does gait retraining treat?

Short answer
Gait retraining treats movement-related pain and walking or running problems by improving how your body loads each step.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it can help with
A physiotherapist watches your walking or running pattern and looks at timing, foot placement, stride, cadence, trunk position, and control of the hip, knee, and ankle. Small, supervised changes can reduce repeated strain and help you use strength more efficiently. Gait retraining may be part of care for IT Band Syndrome, Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, or Shin Splints, especially when symptoms rise with running, hills, stairs, or increased training.
The aim is not to force one perfect style. Your programme is matched to your symptoms, activity, footwear, strength, balance, and the task that brings on pain.
Making practice useful
Begin with the amount and speed your clinician recommends. Practise one change at a time, such as a quieter landing or a slightly shorter stride, and use feedback from a mirror, video, or verbal cue. Stop or reduce the session if pain becomes sharper, alters your movement, or lingers beyond the agreed recovery period. Strength and mobility work may support the new pattern; custom orthotics may be considered when foot mechanics are part of the problem.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain repeatedly returns with activity, causes limping, or does not settle after reducing the provoking task. Seek prompt medical help for sudden inability to bear weight, marked swelling, a deformed limb, new numbness or weakness, or pain after a significant injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which movement is contributing to your symptoms, what cue to practise first, how often to train it, and how to progress back to running or longer walks. Ask whether strength testing, footwear review, or orthotics would add useful support.

Questions people ask
Is gait retraining only for runners?
No. It can address walking patterns after injury, during rehabilitation, or when everyday steps provoke symptoms.
Can gait retraining work without exercises?
Movement practice is central, but strength, balance, mobility, footwear, and activity changes may be combined when they address contributing factors.
