What does frequent urination feel like with type 1 diabetes?

You may need the toilet repeatedly during the day and wake during the night. The urine may be more plentiful rather than just a series of small, urgent amounts. A dry mouth, intense thirst, tiredness, blurred vision, nausea, or unexpected weight loss can occur when blood glucose is high.

Type 1 diabetes can develop quickly, and frequent urination alone does not establish the diagnosis. Similar changes can follow increased fluid intake, medicines, or urinary conditions. Blood glucose testing is needed when diabetes is suspected.

If this is new or is happening with thirst, fatigue, weight loss, or blurred vision, arrange prompt medical assessment. Write down when the change began and any vomiting, abdominal discomfort, breathing change, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Keep drinking fluids while arranging help, unless a clinician has given you different instructions.

Do not delay assessment by trying to manage suspected type 1 diabetes with home diet changes alone. A clinician can decide which blood and urine checks are required.

Seek emergency care for vomiting, severe abdominal pain, deep or rapid breathing, confusion, unusual drowsiness, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms can occur with a dangerous buildup of acids when insulin is lacking. A child or adult with rapidly worsening thirst and urination should be assessed urgently.

Ask whether you need immediate blood glucose and ketone checks, how to recognise worsening illness, and where to go if symptoms escalate. If diabetes is diagnosed, ask how insulin, monitoring, food, and activity will be coordinated.
