What does fracture fixation surgery treat?

The surgeon moves the bone fragments into better alignment, then holds them with hardware such as plates and screws or an intramedullary nail. This approach may be considered for fractures that are displaced, unstable, open, involve a joint surface, or affect an area where alignment matters for movement. Examples include some growth plate fractures, scaphoid fractures, tibial plateau fractures, and slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The exact method depends on the bone, fracture pattern, skin and soft-tissue condition, and your general health.

Some injuries are first supported with an external frame while swelling or soft-tissue damage settles. Imaging during the procedure helps the team check alignment and hardware position.

Follow the team’s instructions about keeping the limb elevated, protecting the wound, and putting weight through the injured area. Your plan may include a cast or brace, pain control, exercises, and physiotherapy. Do not change weight-bearing or wound-care instructions because the fracture can feel better before it is ready for normal loading. Keep follow-up appointments so healing and hardware can be assessed.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or a wound that opens. Seek urgent care for a newly cold, pale, blue, numb, or weak hand or foot, severe swelling, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.

Ask which part of the fracture needs fixation, what hardware is planned, how much weight you may place on the limb, and which changes should trigger a call. Also ask when wound review, imaging, driving, work, and physiotherapy are appropriate.
