What does itchy feet feel like with contact dermatitis?

Contact dermatitis can affect the top layer of skin where it touched a trigger. On the feet, possible triggers include footwear materials, adhesives, dyes, insoles, detergents, or topical products. Itching may be followed by redness, dryness, scaling, swelling, or small fluid-filled blisters. The skin can sting when it is rubbed or exposed to water, and scratching may cause cracks or oozing.

Symptoms may follow a new product or shoe, but a reaction can also develop after repeated exposure. The distribution of the rash and its relationship to contact are useful clues. Other causes of itchy feet can look similar, so an assessment may be needed.

Think back to new shoes, socks, foot products, laundry products, or workplace exposures, and pause the suspected trigger if safe. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser on intact skin. Choose breathable footwear and avoid picking at blisters. A clinician or pharmacist can recommend treatment based on whether the reaction is irritant or allergic.

Seek medical advice if the rash is severe, widespread, recurrent, or interfering with sleep or walking. Get prompt help for rapidly increasing swelling, facial or lip swelling, breathing difficulty, extensive blistering, pus, fever, or severe pain. Persistent symptoms may require a closer look at the trigger and a different diagnosis.
