What Does Finasteride Treatment Treat?

Finasteride reduces the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that can gradually shrink susceptible scalp follicles. It may help slow further thinning and support hair maintenance in appropriate patients; it does not address every cause of hair loss.

A receding hairline or diffuse thinning can have several explanations. Frontal fibrosing alopecia, inflammation, nutritional problems, medicines, and sudden shedding need different assessment and may not respond to finasteride. A diagnosis matters before treatment begins.

A prescriber should review your pattern of hair loss, medical history, current medicines, and reproductive considerations. Take the medicine only as directed and do not share it. Keep photographs under similar lighting if your clinician recommends monitoring. Report sexual, mood, breast, or other troublesome changes rather than stopping or restarting treatment without advice. Other options, such as topical minoxidil, may be discussed when appropriate.
