What does fever feel like with tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis can make the throat feel raw, swollen, or painful, especially when you swallow. Fever may come with headache, tiredness, tender glands in the neck, and a reduced desire to eat. Some people alternate between feeling cold and shivery and feeling overheated. The fever sensation does not show whether tonsillitis is caused by a virus or bacteria; an examination and, when appropriate, a throat test help guide that decision.

Sip water or oral rehydration fluids regularly, and try cool drinks, warm liquids, or ice lollies according to what feels soothing. Rest your voice and choose foods that are easy to swallow. Take fever or pain relief only as directed on the label and ask a pharmacist about age, pregnancy, allergies, or other medicines. Do not share utensils or drinks while you are unwell.

Contact a clinician if fever does not settle, throat pain is severe, or symptoms interfere with drinking. Get urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have noisy or difficult breathing, develop one-sided throat swelling, become confused, or show signs of dehydration such as very little urine and dizziness. A child who is difficult to wake or unable to drink needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether your tonsils need examination or testing, which treatment is suitable, and when you can return to normal activities. Share the temperature readings, the time symptoms started, whether there is a cough, and whether swallowing fluids has become harder.
