What does fever feel like with mumps?

Mumps can cause fever together with fatigue, headache, reduced appetite and soreness or swelling near the jaw and cheeks. The fever may come with shivering as your body temperature rises, followed by sweating as it settles. A thermometer gives a more useful reading than judging temperature by touch. Fever alone cannot identify its cause, because many infections can feel similar.

Rest, drink fluids regularly and wear light, comfortable clothing. Check your temperature if you feel hot or chilled, and keep a note of changes and other symptoms. Avoid close contact while you may be infectious, especially sharing cups or utensils. A pharmacist or clinician can explain which fever medicine is suitable for your age and health history; follow the label and never give aspirin to a child unless a clinician specifically advises it.

Arrange medical advice if fever persists, returns after improving, or occurs with increasing jaw swelling or difficulty eating and drinking. Seek urgent help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, or marked drowsiness. Mumps can rarely affect areas beyond the salivary glands, so new severe symptoms need prompt assessment.

Ask whether your symptoms fit mumps, how long you should avoid close contact, and which warning signs matter for you. Tell the clinician when the fever began, your highest measured reading, vaccination history and any jaw, testicular or abdominal pain.
