What does fever feel like with mpox?

Some people feel shivery before becoming hot or sweaty. Headache, muscle aches, backache, exhaustion, and tender swollen glands may occur around the same time. A rash or skin lesions can develop in the mouth, genital area, face, hands, feet, or elsewhere; lesions may be painful, itchy, or change as they heal. The combination and timing vary, and fever is not enough to identify mpox.

Record when the fever and any skin changes began. Avoid skin-to-skin contact and sharing towels, bedding, clothing, or utensils while waiting for medical advice, particularly if a new unexplained rash is present.

Rest, drink regularly, and wear loose clothing that does not rub sore skin. Wash hands after touching lesions or dressings, keep lesions covered when possible, and clean frequently touched surfaces. Do not scratch, shave over, or pop lesions. Contact a healthcare service before attending in person so you can receive advice that protects other people from possible exposure.

Seek prompt advice for fever with a new unexplained rash, severe pain, eye symptoms, difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, confusion, or inability to drink. Urgent assessment is needed for a rapidly worsening illness, infected-looking skin with increasing redness or pus, or severe dehydration. Contact a clinician early if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or care for a young child with possible mpox.
