What does fever feel like with middle ear infection?

The fever may cause warmth, chills, tiredness, or reduced appetite. An inflamed middle ear can cause a blocked or full sensation, muffled hearing, throbbing pain, or discomfort that is worse when lying down. Young children may tug at the ear, cry more than usual, wake often, or have trouble feeding. Fluid draining from the ear can happen if the eardrum opens and should be discussed with a clinician.

Fever and ear pain can have several causes, including infections affecting nearby areas. An examination of the eardrum helps distinguish them, so the sensation alone cannot confirm a middle ear infection.

Encourage fluids and rest, and keep the person comfortably dressed rather than heavily wrapped. A warm or cool compress held gently against the outer ear may soothe discomfort; stop if it makes pain worse. Use only age-appropriate pain or fever medicine according to the label or a clinician's advice. Do not put oil, cotton buds, or unprescribed drops into the ear.

Arrange medical advice for persistent or worsening ear pain, fever that is not settling, new hearing reduction, or fluid from the ear. Seek urgent help for swelling or redness behind the ear, severe headache, marked drowsiness, facial weakness, repeated vomiting, or difficulty staying hydrated. Babies who are very young, unusually sleepy, or feeding poorly should be assessed promptly.
