What does fever feel like with measles?

A measles fever can feel like a sudden rise in body heat, sometimes preceded by shivering or feeling cold. Children may become unusually quiet, clingy, sleepy, or less interested in food and fluids. Fever often occurs alongside a dry cough, runny nose, sore or red eyes, and later a spreading rash. These features can overlap with other infections, so the feeling of fever alone cannot identify measles.

Keep track of when the fever began, whether it comes and goes, and any new rash or breathing symptoms. Avoid close contact with people who are pregnant, very young, or medically vulnerable until a clinician advises what to do.

Use a thermometer if available, offer frequent sips of fluid, and dress the person in light, comfortable layers. Rest can ease the drained feeling that accompanies fever. Follow the label or a clinician's advice for any fever medicine, taking age and medical conditions into account; do not give aspirin to children. Call a healthcare service before arriving if measles is possible, because the team may arrange an appointment that limits exposure to others.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, severe drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, inability to drink, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine.
