What does fever feel like with influenza?

People with influenza may develop a dry cough, sore throat, blocked or runny nose, muscle aches, headache, and a strong need to rest. Chills can occur as the temperature changes, while sweating may follow. Some people, especially older adults or those with certain health conditions, may have less fever but still be significantly unwell. Fever symptoms overlap with other infections, so the full pattern and timing matter.

Rest, drink regularly, and choose light meals as tolerated. Keep the room comfortably cool and wear breathable layers. Stay home while feeling unwell and reduce close contact with others. Ask a clinician promptly about antiviral treatment if symptoms have recently started and you are pregnant, very young, older, or living with a condition that raises the risk of complications. Use fever medicine only as directed for you.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, a seizure, or inability to keep fluids down.
