What Does Fever Feel Like With Heat Stroke?

Heat stroke happens when the body cannot release heat effectively. The skin may feel very hot and can be dry, damp, or sweaty; sweating may lessen as the illness becomes severe. A person may describe a pounding headache, muscle cramps, marked thirst, nausea, or a racing heartbeat. The most concerning changes involve the brain: confusion, agitation, slurred speech, fainting, a seizure, or difficulty staying awake. These features make heat stroke different from an uncomplicated fever and require urgent medical assessment.

Most people with Heat Stroke notice fever, but the illness can be mistaken for infection or another heat-related problem. The setting matters: symptoms after prolonged heat exposure, exertion, or being in a hot enclosed space should be treated seriously, especially when behaviour or alertness changes.

Call local emergency medical services immediately. Move the person to shade or a cool, ventilated place, remove excess clothing, and begin cooling with cool wet cloths, water mist, fans, or a cool bath if this can be done safely. Keep cooling while help is on the way. Do not leave the person alone. Do not give drinks to someone who is confused, drowsy, vomiting, having a seizure, or unable to swallow normally, because they may choke. Do not rely on fever medicine to treat heat stroke.

Suspected heat stroke is an emergency, so seek help at once rather than waiting to see whether the temperature settles. Urgent assessment is especially critical for confusion, collapse, seizure, severe headache, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or worsening sleepiness. Even if the person seems better after cooling, medical review is still needed because serious effects may not be obvious immediately. A child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a chronic illness may become unwell quickly in high heat.

Ask what may have caused the high temperature and whether tests are needed to check hydration, kidney function, or other organ effects. You can also ask when it is safe to return to exercise or outdoor work, how to prevent another heat illness, and which warning signs should prompt immediate reassessment.
