What does fever feel like with hand, foot and mouth disease?

A child may feel hot to the touch, flushed, unsettled, or less interested in food and play. Chills can happen as the temperature rises, followed by sweating as the body cools. Painful spots or ulcers in the mouth can make drinking uncomfortable, while small spots or blisters on the hands, feet, or around the mouth may appear with the illness. Fever alone does not identify its cause.

Offer frequent small drinks and soft, cool foods if the mouth is sore. Dress the child in light layers and let them rest. Check their temperature with a reliable thermometer, watch how often they urinate, and use only a fever medicine suitable for their age and health after checking the label or asking a clinician. Avoid sharing cups, towels, or utensils while illness is active, and encourage handwashing.

Seek urgent help if the child is hard to wake, has trouble breathing, has a seizure, develops a stiff neck, or cannot keep fluids down. Prompt medical advice is also needed for signs of dehydration such as very little urine, a dry mouth, no tears, or unusual sleepiness. Contact a clinician if the fever persists, worsens, or the child is younger than expected for home monitoring.
