What does fever feel like with croup?

Fever is a common presentation of Croup and may cause warmth, flushed skin, chills, sweating, tiredness, or irritability. A child may seem hot to touch, but touch is not a dependable temperature check, so use a thermometer. Croup also commonly causes a barking cough, a hoarse voice, and noisy breathing that can become more noticeable when the child is upset.

Croup usually involves swelling around the upper airway during a viral illness. Fever reflects the body’s response to infection, while the distinctive cough and breathing noise come from the narrowed upper airway. The fever may be mild or more noticeable, and not every child has the same combination of symptoms. Keeping the child calm matters because crying can make noisy breathing harder.

Keep your child upright and comfort them in a calm voice. Offer frequent drinks and check their temperature when they are settled. Give fever medicine only according to the product directions or a clinician’s advice, taking the child’s age, weight, allergies, and other medicines into account. Avoid forcing food, and watch how easily the child breathes when resting.

Get emergency help if the child is struggling to breathe, the skin between or below the ribs pulls in, the lips look blue or grey, the child is unusually sleepy, drooling and unable to swallow, or noisy breathing continues while resting. Arrange prompt medical advice if drinking becomes difficult, urine is much less frequent, fever persists, or the cough and breathing are getting worse.

Ask whether the breathing noise is present at rest, whether your child needs an examination, and which fever medicine and dose are suitable. Share the temperature reading, when the cough began, how much the child is drinking, and whether symptoms change overnight.
