What does fever feel like with common cold?

You may feel flushed, shivery, achy or unusually tired. A thermometer can confirm that your temperature is raised, because the sensation of being hot can also happen without fever. Sneezing, nasal congestion, a scratchy throat and cough often accompany a cold. In children, appetite and energy may dip. Fever with cold symptoms is not enough to identify the virus or exclude another infection.

Pay attention to the overall pattern: whether breathing is comfortable, whether fluids are staying down, and whether the person is becoming more alert or more unwell. Those details are more useful than the fever sensation alone.

Rest and drink regularly; warm fluids may soothe a sore throat. Wear light layers and keep the room comfortably ventilated. Saline nasal drops or spray can ease a blocked nose. Use fever medicine only as directed for the person’s age and health conditions, and check combination cold products to avoid taking the same ingredient twice. Stay home while feeling unwell and wash hands often.

Seek urgent help for struggling or unusually fast breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, severe drowsiness, dehydration or a seizure. Arrange medical advice if chest pain develops, symptoms improve and then clearly worsen, or the fever persists with increasing weakness. A baby with a fever needs prompt professional advice, as does anyone with a weakened immune system or serious long-term illness.
