What does fever feel like with chickenpox?

A child or adult may seem flushed, warmer than usual, sleepy, irritable or less interested in food. Chills, headache and general aches can occur. The rash often changes from itchy spots to fluid-filled blisters and then scabs, appearing in crops rather than all at once. Fever and rash together can fit chickenpox, but other infections can also cause fever and spots, so the appearance and timing deserve clinical review when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Avoid scratching, because broken blisters can become infected. Keep fingernails short and wash hands after touching the rash. Do not share towels, clothing or bedding with people who have not had chickenpox or vaccination.

Offer frequent drinks and rest. Loose clothing and a cool room may make itching easier; ask a pharmacist or clinician which soothing product is suitable. Keep the person away from school, work and close contact with pregnant people, newborn babies and anyone with a weakened immune system until a clinician says the infectious period has passed. Never give aspirin to a child with chickenpox.

Get urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, unusual drowsiness, confusion, severe headache, a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, difficulty walking or a rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly if the skin around blisters becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful, or if fever returns after improving. Seek advice early for an infant, pregnancy or a weakened immune system.
