What does fever feel like with cellulitis?

You might alternate between feeling hot and shivering, with headache, tiredness or body aches. The nearby skin is often warm, red, swollen and tender; the redness may expand and the area can feel tight. Cellulitis commonly affects a leg, arm or face, but it can occur elsewhere. Fever alone cannot show whether a skin infection is present, so the skin changes and their progression matter.

Take note of the edge of redness and its direction of spread, without delaying care. A red streak, increasing pain or swelling near an eye can signal a more serious problem.

Arrange prompt medical advice for suspected cellulitis, especially when redness is spreading or you feel unwell. Rest the affected limb on a comfortable raised surface if possible, keep the skin clean, and drink fluids. Do not squeeze a blister or wound. A clinician may prescribe antibiotics and will decide whether a wound, insect bite or another cause needs treatment.

Seek urgent help if you feel confused, faint, breathless or severely weak, or if the pain is rapidly worsening. Go promptly for swelling around the eye, a red or painful eye, difficulty moving a limb, purple or blistered skin, or a fever with repeated vomiting. Fast-spreading redness or red streaks also warrant urgent assessment.
