What does fever feel like with brucellosis?

You may feel unusually hot, then shivery as your temperature changes. A damp night or clothing from sweating can be followed by another chilly spell. Brucellosis can also bring a heavy, flu-like feeling, with headache, muscle or joint aches, reduced appetite and low energy. The fever pattern is not specific enough to identify the infection by sensation alone, and other illnesses can feel similar.

Tell a clinician about contact with farm animals, unpasteurised dairy products or travel where brucellosis occurs. Mention when the fever began, whether it comes and goes, and any back, joint or testicular discomfort.

Rest, drink fluids regularly and use light clothing or bedding while you feel hot. Check your temperature with a thermometer and record the time, associated chills and any medicine taken. Arrange a medical assessment if brucellosis is possible, because treatment requires prescription antibiotics and the diagnosis may need blood tests. Do not start leftover antibiotics, since the choice and duration need clinical guidance.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, a severe headache with a stiff neck, persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Prompt assessment is also needed for a fever that keeps returning, worsening joint or back pain, or new swelling in the testicles. These warning signs need evaluation regardless of whether brucellosis is suspected.
