What does fever after birth feel like with endometritis?

Endometritis is inflammation or infection of the lining of the uterus after birth. You may feel feverish, chilled, weak, or generally ill. Cramping or pain low in the abdomen may be stronger than expected, and the uterus may feel tender when examined. Postpartum bleeding or discharge may become heavier, change colour, or develop an unpleasant smell.

These symptoms can overlap with normal recovery, especially while the uterus contracts. A clinician may need to assess your abdomen, bleeding, temperature, and overall condition to work out the cause.

Contact your maternity team or obstetric clinician promptly if you have fever after birth with pelvic pain, uterine tenderness, or foul-smelling discharge. Note when symptoms began, your temperature if measured, and any change in bleeding. Drink fluids if you can, rest, and take only medicines approved for you.

Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, confusion, breathlessness, a racing heartbeat, or rapidly worsening illness. Do not delay assessment because symptoms may progress and treatment may be needed.
