Why heat stroke causes collapse
Heat stroke is a dangerous failure of the body’s ability to control its temperature. A person may become very hot, confused, agitated, drowsy, unsteady, or unable to behave normally. Sweating may continue or may stop; either pattern can occur. Fainting in intense heat can also have other causes, but confusion or altered behaviour makes heat illness an emergency rather than something to watch at home.
Act while waiting for help
Call emergency services immediately. Move the person to shade or an air-conditioned place, remove unnecessary clothing, and cool the skin with wet cloths, fans, or cool packs wrapped in fabric. Do not give drinks to someone who is confused, unconscious, vomiting, or unable to swallow. Stay with them and monitor breathing.
Do not delay emergency care
Emergency help is needed for fainting after heat exposure, confusion, seizure-like movements, severe headache, breathing problems, hot skin, persistent vomiting, or failure to wake normally. Do not let a person with suspected heat stroke drive themselves or return to activity after briefly improving.
After recovery
Ask what caused the overheating, how to return safely to work or exercise, and whether medicines or health conditions increase heat risk. Discuss warning symptoms, hydration planning, cooling breaks, and what someone nearby should do if it happens again.
